In other news, Kinky Boots, the 2013 Tony-winning Best Musical, will follow in the footsteps of Avenue Q, Jersey Boys, and The Play That Goes Wrong by opening Off-Broadway after a successful Broadway run. The tuner about a drag performer saving a family-run shoe factory played for 2,505 performances and featured a book by Harvey Fierstein, score by Cyndi Lauper, and direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell. The same production will begin previews on July 26 at Stage 42 in advance of an Aug. 25 opening.
“We are over the moon to be bringing this beloved show back to New York for audiences to feel the joy once again,” said producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. “Kinky Boots has so much heart, and reminds us to be unashamedly ourselves and raise each other up, which is exactly what we need at this moment in time. We can’t wait to see fans old and new dancing, singing, and leaving the theater with full hearts and open minds.”
“The joy that is Kinky Boots is headed back to NYC!” said Harvey Fierstein. “Beyond the laughs and applause, what I’ve missed most is seeing the audience shed tears of happiness at every performance. Kinky Boots is more than a musical. It’s a life experience.”

COVID cut short Tom Stoppard's new play in London in 2020, and the virus, driven by a surge of the subvariant BA2, continues to affect Broadway and Off-Broadway two years later. We previously reported Daniel Craig tested positive for COVID and his Macbeth delayed starting previews as did the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop. Earlier this week, Matthew Broderick tested positive and his understudy, Tony winner Matthew McGrath took over his role in Plaza Suite. Last night Sarah Jessica Parker also tested positive and the performance was cancelled. Also last night, several performers in Paradise Square were reportedly suffering from COVID-related ailments and that performance was cancelled. The Off-Broadway show Suffs likewise had numerous cast afflictions including Shania Taub who wrote the score and plays the central role of Alice Paul in the musical about women's suffrage. Suffs will be suspending performances until April 10. Heartland at 59E59 has been cancelled altogether.
All of these cancellations and cast replacements do not bode well for Broadway in April which is traditionally the New York theater's busiest month as shows scramble to open in order to beat the deadline for the Tony Awards. Hopefully, all the shows will premiere in time for eligibility. Speaking of awards, the Lortels announced their nominations yesterday. Kimberly Akimbo and Oratorio for Living Things lead with the most nominations with six each. The awards will be presented on May 1 at NYU Skirball. No word yet on dates for the Drama Desk Awards. The Outer Critics Circle noms will be announced on April 26, winners announced on May 16 and presented on May 26 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center.
