Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) will assume the role of Sister Aloysius in Roundabout Theater Company's revival of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: A Parable. She takes over for Tyne Daly who was hospitalized last Friday and must withdraw from the production while she receives medical care. While Daly's condition was unspecified, it was reported she is expected to make a full recovery. Ryan's first performance will be Tues. Feb. 13 and the opening has been pushed back to March 7. In the interim, Sister Aloysius will be played the understudy, Tony nominee and Drama Desk winner Isabel Keating (The Boy from Oz).

“With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery.  We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of ‘Sister Aloysius.’  We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production up on its feet during this first week of performances,” notes director Scott Ellis.

The cast of Doubt: A Parable also stars Tony & SAG Award winner Liev Schreiber as “Father Flynn,” Quincy Tyler Bernstine as “Mrs. Muller,” and Zoe Kazan as “Sister James.”

Ryan has received a SAG Award as part of the ensemble for Only Murders in the Building and was nominated for Tony Awards for A Streetcar Named Desire and Uncle Vanya, both Roundabout productions.

B'way Update: My Son and Casting Doubt

Following acclaimed runs in London's West End and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Rob Madge's solo show My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do?) will play Broadway this coming spring with previews starting Feb. 27, 2024 at the Lyceum Theater prior to an opening set for March 12. Madge wrote and stars in this autobiographical journey of one family as they explore their son's love of all things Disney, theater and their queer identity. Themes of pop culture love and self-discovery are woven through this Olivier-nominated one-person play. The action centers on Madge at age 12 as they create a Disney parade in their house for their grandmother. Madge, who is non-binary, has appeared in London productions of Mary Poppins, Oliver and Les Miz.

B'way Update: Doubt; Prayer; Writers and Musicians Up in Arms

Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber will
star in a revival of Doubt.

Tony and Emmy winner Tyne Daly and Tony winner Liev Schreiber will headline the first Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: A Parable, presented by Roundabout Theater Company with performances beginning in February 2024. Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis directs. The play about a strong-willed nun confronting a priest over a suspected illicit relationship with a young male student originally premiered Off-Broadway in 2004 at Manhattan Theater Club's City Center space. That production starred Cherry Jones, Brian F. O'Byrne, Heather Goldenhersh, and Adriane Lenox and later transferred to Broadway where it won four Tony Awards including Best Play and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A 2008 film version starred Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis.

Prayer for the French Republic

Speaking of Manhattan Theater Club, the company will present the Broadway premiere of Joshua Harmon's Prayer for the French Republic, which was seen at MTC's City Center stage in 2022 where it won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway play. The play concerns three generations of a French-Jewish family as they deal with the horrors of anti-Semitism. David Cromer repeats his direction and performances begin at the Samuel J. Friedman in February 2024. Casting and specific dates will be announced at a later date. MTC's first Broadway offering of the season will be Jocelyn Bioh's Jaja's African Hair-Braiding, dealing with the titular Harlem styling establishment, which will open sometime during the fall.
