The musical Lempicka, based on the life of controversial Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka, will join a growing number of new musicals opening on Broadway this spring. After regional runs at the Williamstown Theater Festival and La Jolla Playhouse, previews begin March 19 in advance of an April 14 opening at the Longacre Theater. Eden Espinosa (also starring in The Gardens of Anuncia this season Off-Broadway) will play the title role and Tony winner Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown) will direct. The book, lyrics and original concept are by Carson Kreitzer and the music is by Matt Gould who also co-authored the book.

“When I first saw this show inspired by the life and times of Tamara de Lempicka, my great-grandmother, I got goosebumps and tears in my eyes," says Lempicka Estate President Marisa de Lempicka in a statement. "The music, the story, the choreography, the set, and the incredibly talented cast, directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin, were truly moving. We feel so happy and proud that Tamara’s art and life story keep inspiring new generations, almost 100 years later, and that her resilience and iconic creativity are being portrayed in this extraordinary production.”

“Tamara de Lempicka’s life spanned some of the most consequential eras in modern history, and her deep and complex story is an ideal subject for exactly the kind of show I love to both see and create: one that is simultaneously intimate and epic,” adds Chavkin. “I think Carson and Matt are visionary storytellers—Carson is an under-recognized leader in the new play field, known for exquisite sparseness and thematic density, and Matt is a wild heart whose music fuses contemporary vibes with classical musical theatre…and simply makes your heart swell. How lucky for all of us to have this piece brought to life by a performer as dynamic and brilliant as Eden Espinosa.”
Aaron Tveit,
the next Sweeney Todd?

Rumors
: According to the New York Post, Tony winners Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge) and Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie) are in line to take over for Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford in the Sweeney Todd revival after they leave on Jan. 14....There is reportedly a revival of Dance of the Vampires, one of the biggest flops in Broadway history, in the works. A blind item on a website called CrazyDaysandNights states an unnamed unsuccessful musical from over 20 years ago was reworked because its now late composer was not happy with its reception or the demands of its star. Said show is "finally almost ready to proceed." The item references Fearless Vampire Killers, the Roman Polanski film which served as the source for Dance and its composer Jim Steinman has passed away. I saw that show back in 2002 and it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen in 50 years of theatergoing. It would need a major overhaul to work.
