Daniel Dae Kim will star in Yellow Face at Roundabout's Todd Haimes Theater. |
Next up is another Broadway premiere of a play previously seen Off-Broadway. Sanaz Toossi's English won the Pulitzer Prize after it opened at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2022 in a co-production with ATC and Roundabout. The play about an ESL class in Iran will open in the winter of 2024-25 with Knud Adams repeating his directing chores.
David Hyde Pierce will headline a new adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance. |
The season will conclude in April 2025 with a new adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance by Rupert Holmes set in New Orleans. Tony and Emmy winner David Hyde-Pierce and Tony nominee Ramin Karimloo star with Scott Ellis directing and Warren Carlyle choreographing.
Off-Broadway at the company's Laura Pels space, two new plays will premiere. The Counter by Meghan Kennedy (Sept. 2024) focuses on the relationship between a waitress and regular customer who asks her a shocking favor. Then in Jan. 2025, Bess Wohl's Liberation opens. In 1970 Ohio, a group of women meet to try to change the world. Fifty years later, a daughter of one of the women tries to understand what happened.
Purple Rain: A stage version of Prince's album and 1984 film Purple Rain is now in development. The book by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Appropriate, An Octoroon) is based on the screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn. Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz will direct.
“It's been almost 40 years since Prince’s legendary film, PURPLE RAIN, took the world by storm and we can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the PURPLE RAIN legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story,” said L Londell McMillan, Chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, Founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music. “We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team, who are bringing a theatricality to the film’s original fictional story. We can’t wait for a new generation to discover PURPLE RAIN and for lovers of the original film and album to experience its power once again, this time live.”
The stage version will follow the film's storyline of a Minneapolis-based musician called the Kid and his struggles with creating his music, a tumultuous home life and a budding romance.
