B'way Update: Gatsby Musical

The musical version of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of wealth, privilege, sex, and class, will open at the Broadway Theater on April 25, with previews beginning April 2. Tony nominees Jeremy Jordan (Newsies) and Eva Noblezada (Hadestown) will repeat their lead performances of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan from the production at Paper Mill Playhouse earlier this winter. The show features music & lyrics by Tony Award nominees Nathan Tysen (Paradise Square) & Jason Howland (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Little Women), a book by Jonathan Larson Grant winner Kait Kerrigan (The Mad Ones), and is staged by award-winning director Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) and choreographer Dominique Kelley (“Mariah’s Magical Christmas Special”, “Dancing with the Stars”). 

Another Broadway production, Mother Play, had earlier announced an opening date of April 25. So it looks like there will be two openings on the same date.

This is not the first stage version of Fitzgerald's novel to reach the New York stage. Elevator Repair Service presented Gatz, a marathon production of the entire book at the Public Theater in 2010, and an immersive version played the Park Central Hotel earlier this season. Owen Davis wrote a stage adaptation which played Broadway in 1926. Another musical version with music and lyrics by Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett and a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok is set to debut at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., in June of this year. There have also been opera (by John Harbison, premiering in 1999) and ballet editions. (Now that Gatsby is in the public domain, there are numerous adaptations.)

Gatsby has been seen on the silver screen four times--in 1926, 1949 (with Alan Ladd and Betty Field), 1974 (Robert Redford and Mia Farrow), and 2013 (Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan). A 2000 TV mini-series on A&E starred Tobey Stephens and Mira Sorvino.
