B'way Update: Dog Day Theater and Dates; Possible Strike

Dog Day Afternoon, the play version of the 1975 Sidney Lumet film by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Aldy Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy), has announced dates and a theater for its Broadway run. Previews begin on March 10 at the August Wilson Theater prior to a March 30 opening. Directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III), Dog Day Afternoon will star, making their Broadway debuts, Emmy Award winner Jon Bernthal (“The Bear,” “The Walking Dead”) as Sonny Amato and two-time Emmy Award winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, “The Bear”) as Sal DeSilva. Additional casting and the complete creative team will be announced.

Hopefully, by the time this show begins previews, the threat of an actors' strike on Broadway will be over. Actors' Equity and the Broadway League will resume negotiations for a new contract on Oct. 8--the old one expired on Sept. 28. The main sticking point is health care. The union is asking for an increase in the amount the producers contribute to performers' medical insurance. Members have authorized the union to strike if necessary as a bargaining chip. This would be the first actors' strike on Broadway since 1968 and would effect 32 shows (non-profits like Lincoln Center, Manhattan Theater Club, Second Stage, and Roundabout Theater Company operate under a different contract.) Off-Broadway would not be effected. There have been Broadway strikes brought by the musicians in 2003 and stagehands in 2007.
